Summer of Bitcoin

Summer of Bitcoin is a global internship program that brings university students into Bitcoin open-source development and design. Participants learn how real FOSS projects work, get matched with mentors, and spend the summer contributing to active codebases.

The program combines structured training with project work. Students go through an application and proposal process, join teams across the Bitcoin ecosystem, and receive hands-on guidance from active contributors.

Why fund it?

New contributors need time, mentorship, and enough financial support to learn difficult codebases. Programs that provide that support help the whole ecosystem.

OpenSats began supporting Summer of Bitcoin through the OpenSats Education Initiative in July 2024. That support helps cover student stipends, mentor gratuities, and the coordination work needed to run the program.

What's next?

Summer of Bitcoin keeps expanding its alumni and mentor network. As of the latest developer training impact report, the program has trained more than 200 students, with many alumni going on to contribute to projects such as Bitcoin Core, BDK, Fedimint, Galoy, and libsecp256k1.

Summer of Bitcoin should keep training students, bring alumni back as mentors, and help more first-time contributors stay active in open-source Bitcoin projects.
